My daughter booked this “hotel” for us as it was near to the Birmingham arena. We arrived at 3.30 pm (opening hrs 3.0pm). The owner appeared wearing pyjamas and proceeded to be very rude to us by asking why we had knocked on the door when there was clearly a sign on the door saying they weren’t open until 4.0pm. We explained had arrived earlier than expected and needed to use the toilets so he grudgingly signed us in - not a welcoming start! We were asked what time we would like breakfast and said 0900 (after all it was a Sunday!) but subsequently told our breakfast was at 0830 so the question was purely rhetorical! The bedroom and facilities were fine. The menu for breakfast looked really good and I chose kippers with scrambled egg. Was then told no kippers (they reckoned they’d run out - personally I couldn’t see a run on kippers!). I had an omelette instead. My daughter chose the continental breakfast ie croissant and a selection of cheeses and continental meats but this is what she got (see photo) - a truly disgusting selection - they clearly have no idea what they’re doing and clearly catering is not their strong point. It was certainly not worth the £100 per night which was charged due to it’s convenient location to the Birmingham Arena. We would NOT recommend this hotel.
Raj was very welcoming on arrival and allowed us to stay a bit longer than the regular check out time of 10am as our flight was in the afternoon. He called a taxi for us which arrived promptly. Lovely Shakespeare themed B and B in close proximity to the airport and NEC. Clean, comfortable with a modern bathroom.
Having not looked at any reviews before travel I was taken back a little to find the property was a converted house on the fringes of a modern estate. Not your typical guest house. It is basically a modern large detached family house with the rooms converted for use as a guest house. The foyer no longer looks like the pictures attached as a wooden wall has been put in and the area does not appear accessible and is used as an office area. The room I stayed in was clean and tidy and adequate with a nice touch of snacks in the mini bar fridge. Size of the room was fine with a good sized bathroom with a shower only. I’m not sure any rooms actually had a bath. I found the house a bit too hot with creaking heating pipes in the night and it’s noisier than a hotel or larger old style guest houses as the house is a modern build with plasterboard walls etc so you here everyone else milling about. The morning breakfast was fine and efficient service. The location is great for business and the NEC but if you are visiting with family / friends it’s a drag to the train station (10-15 mins walk) or any of the facilities I the village which there are not many. Train is £4.95 return into Birmingham City central station. The house is let down b6 the fact it has not evening meals or bar hence you have to go out. Overall a convenient spot for business / visiting NEC with ok adequate facilities.
Whilst the room was very clean and the facilities were okay there is no evening meal or bar facilities so you need to walk or get a taxi along to the village. Don't understand the "Shakespearean retreat" comment either. I have also made several attempts to get my invoice which I was promised would be emailed to me. I have sent 5 emails and had not one reply. Clearly don't check emails or listen to messages left on their phone as no one ever answers. There isn't sufficient parking, the owner had to come move his car so that I could park otherwise I was on the street. Unfortunately wont rush back to stay.
I stayed at Arden House for a weekend, whilst attending Cake International at the NEC. This B&B is perfectly located to the NEC, as well as Marston Green and the train station. The staff at Arden House are friendly and welcoming. My bedroom was a good size, clean and comfortable. The bathroom was also very clean. A cooked breakfast is very good and highly recommended. All in all it was a very good stay and experience.
