Birmingham Central Backpackers
I stayed at the central backpackers for 3 non-consecutive nights during a one week trip to Birmingham in March this year. My personal highlight was the common room. It offered lots of practical ammenities such as a kitchen which suited me as I always bought my own food and lockers (which only required a £5 refundable deposit) which again was great as I moved around the city and didn’t want to carry everything around all the time. The common room also offered cosy couches, a tv and tea/coffee making facilities which perfectly reflected the cold days of early autumn! Funky music and sweet decorations displayed on the walls gave it a lively/cosy character and encouraged people to congregate. Central backpackers was really able to tap into the sense of community and encouraged me to feel more “ apart of it”, something which can sometimes be a challenge as a solo traveller.
I stayed here for the location. Bunks in 2nd block not comfortable. Not enough bathrooms or toilets. Lounge ok, but I was a bit annoyed that they put the massive TV on, just after I got comfy. I did not sleep well, and breakfast not appetising so I didn't bother!
The second I walked into this hostel I knew I was going to like it. It was bright and colourful and had a good vibe. It's located a very short walk from Birmingham coach station which is a plus and only a 10 minute walk to the Bullring. I got their way before checking and they let me keep my bag in the store room and the girl at the counter was friendly and definitely not boring. The rooms are simple but that's all you need and had a decent shower with hot water and good pressure. Breakfast is included with tea and coffee, fruit, cordial and toast with about 8 different kinds of jam and peanut butter. I was only there for a night but would definitely stay again.
Pros: The bathroom (toilet+shower) on the first floor was relatively clean. I used this for both days of my stay as the others on the remaining floors were awfully dirty. One of the only hostels near city centre however in a dodgy area Common room with running tea/coffee 24/7 Breakfast with all the main requirements - fruit, cereal, toast with butter/jam. Baggage storage Budget hostel Cons The linen (pillow cover and duvet cover) werent fresh - they were used hence I had to exchange them for fresh ones. Please check before use! The hostel is located in Digbeth which is infamously known for being an unsafe place. If you are alone (whether male or female), please use taxi services after sunset - walk at your own risk. The rooms are located in another building (50 metres) away from the building where the reception is located. So for single women, if you are arriving at night please request the staff at reception to accompany you till the front door of the building. If you are staying over the weekend, be prepared to hear some loud -thumping music played from adjacent buildings all night long. No lockers
This backpackers hostel is in the outskirts the immediate City Centre a short walk from the Bull Ring and Central shopping Access - close to local bus routes and only about 100 meters from the coach station it is in a back street with various industrial premises and a large railway viaduct alongside. I could see that some people might not feel comfortable in the dark although I found it fine. Level access from the street. The hostel - there is a large comfortable living area with free tea and coffee as well as WiFi, as well as a well equipped kitchen The reception staff on duty was really great and very friendly. My bed was in a different building which requires a door code. The room was a long thin one with triple decker bunks built in a big improvement to the normal bunks. Each bed had a full length privacy curtain which I thought was great. The bed was comfortable and although it had its own socket there was no light, a minor problem with most people having phones. The showers were clean and worked well. The price (£10) included a breakfast but I had to be up early so can’t comment on it. I liked it a lot and will return
